An attempt to translate the theme song of Yuen Fan (1984)

Yuen Fan (1984) by Leslie Cheung and Anita Mui

Yuen Fan, the Canto-pop song is the theme song of Hong Kong movie "Behind The Yellow Line" (or Yuen Fan 1984).

The theme of the song is not matching the movie content that the song is about a pair of man and woman got together but are separated at last while the movie involves several complicated relationships between two men and two women.

Yet, the song has been so popular among the Chinese communities in Hong Kong, mainland China, Taiwan and overseas since 1984 even after both of the singers Leslie Cheung Kwok Wing (1956 - 2003) and Anita Mui Yim Fong (1963 - 2003) passed away.

I attempted to translate this song owing to the fact that the influential power of Leslie Cheung is so tremendous that even nowadays some of the Korean dramas and Korean stars like mentioning him, his songs and movies. Besides, the Chinese concept of "Yuen Fan" is so much important and Jimmy Lo's lyric somewhat successfully states out what it means.

Lastly, the first of April is the death day of Leslie Cheung.

Song: Yuen Fan
Song writer: Nonoy O'Campo
Lyricist : Jimmy Lo
English Translation: Home Office Content

(Man singing)

Without a sound of (saying) "see again"

Without half of a sound of sigh

Go just as nothing happened and no talking

The past at last passed

Leaving everything (what was happening) before on the mind

(Woman singing)

Every piece of (those) beautiful scenes

flashes once again in the ocean of the brain

Is it, isn't it can prove (that I) used to have 'Yuen' with him?

(Man singing)

Turns around hundred times during the painfully hardships

However the 'fruit' is before (our) eyes

The fact proves (that we) don't have 'Yuen'

I already dare not to say again:

"In the coming days, (we) will see again!"

* (Man and woman singing together)

You (and) I are separated so much afar

Which year (?) Which day (?) (we) can see each other

That situation, will it change?

Note:
1. The Chinese Characters 結果 means the fruit which is understood as the outcome, result or consequence.

2. The last section of the lyric with * will be singing once again.
